4 Summer Heat Safety Tips

While you’re enjoying the outdoors this summer, it’s important to stay safe from the heat.

It’s getting hot out there! Staying safe in the heat is important for everyone, but adults over age 65 are at higher risk for heat-related health problems. 

While you’re out and about in warmer weather, keep these heat-safety tips in mind to stay safe this summer.

Heat Safety Tips

1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends drinking more water than usual in the heat. Another important thing to note: don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Take water with you when you leave the house in a lightweight, reusable water bottle that you can fill up on the go. Want to spruce it up? Add in some refreshing slices of cucumber or lime for added flavor. If you’re worried about your hydration, speak with your doctor, who can tell you how much water you should be drinking every day.

2. Wear light, breathable clothing.

When getting dressed, choose looser fitting clothing that allows for some airflow. Cotton and linen clothing is especially breathable and lightweight. Wearing light layers is also a great idea if you’re not sure what the temperature will be like throughout the day. Another tip? Dress in light-colored clothing to help stay cool.

3. Avoid crowds or outdoor activities other than a light walk.

The CDC recommends staying inside where there’s air conditioning as much as possible when the temps rise; but if you are outside, it’s best to avoid large crowds or lots of activity so you don’t overheat. Seek shade, limit your time outside in the heat, and choose to do outdoor activities early in the morning during the cooler parts of the day. 

4. Protect yourself from the sun.

Always remember to project yourself from the sun when you are outdoors. Wear sunglasses and a wide-brim hat that offers good coverage for your face. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and apply it at least 30 minutes before leaving the house. Reapply at least every 2 hours.
